Houghton High School continues Winter Fun Day

Today is one of the most anticipated celebrations of the academic calendar at Houghton High School. Winter Fun Day began as a way to break up the long third marking period, traditionally defined by few holidays or other chances for students to get away from the classroom. There is an opportunity for Gremlins to commingle in a non-academic setting and find common interests. That stretches from dozens of activities within the gym and campus grounds to skating at Dee Stadium, or even skiing and tubing at Mont Ripley.

Principal Cole Klein says COVID won’t stop the afternoon festivities, but it will dent several Fun Day morning staples.

We always have an all-school breakfast with students and staff in the morning. Rather than have everyone together this year, we’re breaking up into some smaller groups.

Students will also miss out on an opportunity to learn more about the high school’s non-core academic offerings.

We’ve also kind of paired this with an electives expo in the past where students get to move around and meet with our teachers, and learn more about all of the electives opportunities we have here at Houghton High. That is not happening this year.

Klein says there are some attempts to build social cohesion during orientation for new students, but Winter Fun Day is by far the largest effort from Houghton High School to foster bonds between pupils through extracurricular activities. Students signed up for their top choices last week through an online survey.
