Houghton, Hancock address virtual breakfast

Tomorrow’s virtual breakfast presented by the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce and the Keweenaw Economic Development Alliance will feature presentations by the city managers of Houghton and Hancock, as well as the Michigan Department of Transportation. The main thrust of each will be on construction. US-41, Sharon Avenue, and M-203 will be addressed by Rob Tervo. Hancock’s Mary Babcock says she’ll discuss the work on Ingot Street.

Both Babcock and Houghton’s Eric Waara have plans to get into economic subjects as well. Babcock says there are still many questions being asked about the development of the business park.

When is it gonna start? How many sites are there? What are you going to do about the roads? Will there be street lights and sidewalks? People, in general, just want to know what kind of infrastructure we are gonna be adding.

The main entrance will be off Lake Annie Road, with a gravel path handling traffic from Campus Drive. The site has been intended for a business park for decades and was one of seven evaluated by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation across the state, eventually chosen as the best location.

Waara hopes to speak about the increasingly crowded business scene on Sheldon Avenue.

I call it a fortunate problem…”business on its way soon” signs that we like to put up when businesses are working on a building or something like that, I had to order four more of them. We’ll talk about some of the new businesses coming into Houghton.

The zoom gathering starts Wednesday morning at 7:30.
