Houghton Girls Claim District Crown – Thursday Sports Wrap

High School

In the girls high school basketball district playoffs last night…
• Houghton claimed the Division Two district crown by edging Escanaba 63-60. Meghan Trewhella led the Gremlins with 19 points, and Annika Peterson added 14. The Huskies will face either Kingsley or Boyne City in the regional semifinal Tuesday at Manistique High School, with the broadcast on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf. The Stags and Ramblers will decide their district championship game tomorrow night.
• In Division Three semifinals, Hancock used a strong second half to eliminate Ishpeming 53-37. Calumet’s season ended with a close 51-46 loss to Negaunee. Caitlin Strom led the Copper Kings with 14 points. Ella Mason scored 32 for the Miners. Hancock and Negaunee will play for the district title tomorrow night.
• In Division Four, District 98 semifinals, Baraga downed Dollar Bay-Tamarack City 56-45. Lake Linden-Hubbell outscored Jeffers 50-33. The Lakes and Vikings will decide the district title tomorrow night at Baraga.
• In Division Four, District 97 semifinals, Ironwood dispatched Ontonagon 51-41, and Ewen-Trout Creek ousted Wakefield-Marenisco 60-29. The Red Devils and Panthers will play for the district title tomorrow night at Bessemer.

In high school hockey, Escanaba slipped past Sault Ste. Marie 4-3 to win its regional title. The Eskymoes will face Houghton in the quarterfinals Saturday at 1:00 at Lakeview Arena in Marquette. Coverage will begin at 12:40 on the Voice of the Gremlins, 97.7 The Wolf.

College Basketball

Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Association basketball tournament quarterfinals were played last night.

Ellie Mackay poured in 37 points, as the Michigan Tech women’s team outscored Wayne State 80-71. Mackay’s effort tied the school record for most points in a game. The second-seeded Huskies will face sixth-seed Ferris State in the tournament semifinals Saturday afternoon at Grand Valley State in Allendale.

The Tech men’s team stunned top-seeded Parkside 73-68. The Huskies led by double digits at halftime, and held off the Rangers down the stretch. Marcus Tomashek paced Tech with 26 points. MTU will face fifth-seeded Grand Valley in the semifinals Saturday at Ferris State in Big Rapids.

The Northern women’s team ended its season with a 64-56 loss to Saginaw Valley State.

The NMU men’s team defeated Saginaw Valley 75-66. The third-seeded Wildcats will face second-seed Ferris State in the other men’s semifinal Saturday in Big Rapids.

College Hockey

Michigan Tech’s Blake Pietila has been named the CCHA Goaltender of the Month for February. It’s the second straight month he’s been honored, and the third time this season. The Huskies open the Central Collegiate Hockey Association playoffs tomorrow night at home against St. Thomas.

NHL

The Red Wings host the Kraken tonight. Coverage will begin at 6:45 on 99.3 The Lift.

Detroit has traded defenseman Filip Hronek to the Canucks. The Wings also gave Vancouver a fourth-round pick in this year’s draft. In exchange, the Wings received a first round pick and a second round pick in the draft.

The Wings have locked in team captain Dylan Larkin for the next eight years. The contract extension announced yesterday is worth nearly $70 million.

NBA

The Pistons dropped a 117-115 heartbreaker to the Bulls last night. Detroit’s late comeback ended when Jaden Ivey called a timeout the team didn’t have with 9 seconds remaining. The Bulls sank a series of free throws to seal the win. Bojan Bogdanovic scored 34 for Detroit.

The Pistons visit the Cavaliers Saturday. Coverage will begin at 7:05 on 99.3 The Lift.

MLB

Nick Maton’s two-run homer in the bottom of the ninth gave the Tigers an 8-7 victory over the Pirates in Grapefruit league play yesterday. Eric Haase and Tyler Nevin also homered for Detroit. Starter Matt Manning gave up a run over two innings.

The Tigers will face the Orioles this afternoon. Matthew Boyd will start for Detroit.

The Brewers fell to the Angels 4-3 in Cactus League play yesterday. Starter Lucas Erceg gave up three runs in the first inning. Mike Brosseau homered.

The Brewers will play the Rangers this afternoon. Corbin Burnes will start for Milwaukee.

Brewers outfielder Tyrone Taylor has been sidelined with a sprained elbow. He’s expected to miss the first month of the regular season.

Major League Baseball is moving to take over regional television broadcasts for a number of teams. Sinclair Broadcast Group’s Diamond Sports Media, which operates as Bally Sports, seems headed for bankruptcy. The company is more than $8 billion in debt, and owes $1 billion in rights payments to teams by the end of the month. That will affect Tigers and Brewers broadcasts. Warner Brothers Discovery’s AT&T SportsNet networks have also indicated that they will be unable to make rights payments to the teams they cover.
