Houghton gets Housing and Urban Development help

The City of Houghton is the only Michigan municipality to receive funds from the US Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Capital Fund Emergency Safety and Security Program. Just shy of $14 million dollars is being handed out nationwide. The Houghton Housing Commission gets $12,507 of that.

The money has to be used on safety in a broader sense, but that can be met through a variety of different avenues. “These grants may be used to install, repair, or replace capital equipment or systems that contribute to a safer living environment for residents, including security systems/surveillance cameras, fencing, lighting systems, emergency alarm systems, window bars, deadbolt locks, doors, and carbon monoxide detectors.”

In addition to Heritage Manor, the Houghton Housing Commission operates 30 family residences of various sizes. Rents are determined using a percentage of income or a flat monthly rate, depending on the preference of the tenant.
