Houghton County Sheriff presents lifesaving awards

In recognition of their rescue efforts last month when a man fell through the ice near Stanton Township beach, Houghton County Sheriff Brian McLean handed out lifesaving awards to three men Friday. The ceremony was short, but the sentiments were sincere when McLean gave plaques to Sheriff Deputy Philip Helminen, Conservation Officer Brian Lasanen, and Stanton Township Fire’s Anthony Lampanen.

Lampanen was first on the scene. He went out onto the slick, icy break wall at the upper entry of the canal, throwing a rope to the man who had fallen in. When asked what it is like to risk your own health to save someone else, Lampanen said he trusted that others would be arriving soon. He didn’t want to call himself a hero.

I guess I don’t think about it a whole lot. It was good to save someone’s life. I guess it isn’t real good to take too much honor, it’s God’s honor.

The actions of all three men on January 17th speak for themselves, and they were indeed heroic.
