Houghton County Road Commission keeps up with storm

After a remarkably mild season last year, winter is back in the Keweenaw…but not too harsh. Houghton County Road Commission Engineer Kevin Harju says the budget is still within the usual range.

We’re at about $1.4 million, so about $400,000 more than last year on snow removal [at this time]. In an average winter we spend about $2.1 million dollars.

This week’s storms have kept crews busy.

When it’s snowing we have to plow and we can’t push banks back, blowing them with the snow blower back, until we have a day where there’s no snow. The same people that plow the snow, we need to run the snow blowers and clean up areas.

Harju says the biggest challenges facing the organization are an aging equipment fleet and a shortage of workers. The Road Commission plows primary and essential routes through Houghton County seven days a week as needed. Essential locations include sharp curves, or hills with steep grades, where drivers will struggle unless the road is clear.
