Houghton County registers first COVID death in months

Although COVID numbers continue to trend in the right direction, one new death was registered in Houghton County in the past week. It is the first one since March. There were 19 cases in the region’s largest county over the last seven days, a far cry from the beginning of the year when that was the daily average.

Baraga County continues to come down from its recent spike. It had 22 cases, half of the tally from the beginning of May. Keweenaw County had no new cases.

Vaccination rates have stopped advancing in most western UP counties. Houghton County climbed to 39.6 percent and Keweenaw is up to 48.4 percent. Houghton is now ahead of Baraga.
