Debbie Bradford from Rukkila, Negro, and Associates updated the Houghton County Board of Commissioners on this year’s audit. Overall, the process was smooth sailing. The county got an unmodified opinion, meaning that everything was acceptable without qualification. Various stimulus acts brought in almost $2 million in additional federal money, compared to last year. The largest expense increase comes from the road commission, related to flooding in recent years. Bradford specifically commended county staff for helping to make the audit a painless process.
Cheryl Patrick from the Equalization Department gave an update on taxable values across the county. The real estate market has been hot and it shows as the cumulative total is now over $1,350,000,000. The three biggest municipalities are Portage Township, plus the Cities of Houghton and Hancock. Patrick said buyers are coming from near and far over the past 18 months.
Commissioner Glenn Anderson said he was particularly impressed by the results.
