Copper Island Academy has taken the next step toward expanding its campus near the Houghton County Airport. At last night’s Houghton County commission meeting the board approved a land sale agreement and resolution to sell parcel a of lot 21 at the Houghton county air park to the copper island academy for 5,000 dollars.
Houghton County’s Michigan State University Extension Office Director, Paul Putnam, will be paid 45,500 dollars for his annual salary. There is no change from the previous year. The MsU Extension office works throughout the year within Houghton County to provide various educational programs focused on agriculture and natural resources for youth in the area. The MSU extension office works closely with kids in the 4-H program, which helps young people learn the important responsibilities of raising farm animals and livestock. Most often 4-H animals appear at county fairs before heading to auction.
Speaking of the Houghton County Fair.
The county commission and the fair board were recently made aware that the fair’s 2022liability insurance bill, a portion of which is pad by the county, was not billed to Houghton Couny at that time. The county has agreed to pay for it’s portion of the Houghton County Fair’s liability insurance for 2022, and 2023. Additionally, the Commission plans on extending the county’s 76 years of support for the fair board. And has agreed to commit a portion of the 2024 budget to the county’s portion of the liability insurance, setting aside 10,000 dollars. In past years, the county and the fair board have split the cost of liability insurance down the middle. Going forward the county wishes to pay the fair board for it’s portion of the insurance, allowing the fair board to have complete control of when payments are made. Rather than the continuing the potential of another bill being sent to one party and not the other.
