Houghton beginning budget process

Houghton City Manager Eric Waara asked the council for an initial budget session on March 31st, which would allow members to have input on any particular items they desire to see included. That will let adjustments be made before the work sessions take place in April and May. Waara ran through the full schedule.

So, 3/31, 4/21, 5/5 and 5/19 is what I’m proposing.

All meeting dates are on Wednesday.

Councilman Brian Irizarry updated the body on a recent session of the Non-motorized Transportation Subcommittee. The group consists of Irizarry, Councilor Joan Suits, Councilor Dan Salo, Waara, and Chief of Police John Donnelly. Irizarry said the group unanimously concluded that the average daily traffic rate does not warrant a traffic stop on Montezuma Avenue. Irizarry addressed whether the state would take action on its own.

It appears unlikely that MDOT will intervene to install a traffic stop and crosswalk or pedestrian hybrid beacon along Montezuma Avenue in the next five years

A majority of the meeting consisted of a presentation by Waara about designs for a new pier near the library downtown.
