Houghton and Hancock receive grant awards for shared streets and space improvements

Michigan awards 6.5 million dollars to municipalities improving shared space infrastructure. On Tuesday the Governor’s office announced 27 Michigan towns will receive a portion of 6.5 million dollars as a part of the Shared Streets and Spaces Grant program. The program funds projects that will improve plazas, sidewalks, curbs, streets, bus stops, parking areas, and public spaces supporting public health mobility and strengthening commerce.

In Houghton County, the city of Houghton and the city of Hancock will each receive 200,000 dollars for projects. The city of Houghton plans to use the grant funds for improvements at Bridgeview Park. Hancock will use funding for a project improving pedestrian crossings on Elevation Street. Several other municipalities in the Upper Peninsula also received about 1.4 million dollars supporting streets and space projects in the region. Grant awards across the state ranged from 35,000 to 200,000 dollars per project.
