Houghton and Hancock both racing to establish dog park

Both sides of the portage are going to man’s best friend. Recent community surveys in Houghton and Hancock have ranked the idea of a dog park high on the list of welcomed amenities. Houghton Manager Eric Waara spoke about the work being done to set up a temporary site on Garnet Street.

We’re going to be meeting with folks from the Rotary, because we have been trying to find a spot to at least put a first dog park in. Just a place, an off-leash dog park, fenced in.

Right now clearing and grubbing is being conducted by city crews. Waara says the main goal is to rid the park of Norway maples. They have a shallow root system that makes it nearly impossible to plant grass underneath. The roots tend to tangle and eventually kill the tree itself. Neither characteristic makes it a good candidate for public parks.

Hancock is looking to achieve the same goal, but taking a different approach. The city is trying to set up a five-member panel to study options for a dog park. It will be an all-volunteer committee and the posting gives no details on the time commitment expected for participants. Those interested are encouraged to email city@cityofhancock.com for more information.
