Continued below average temperatures have more municipalities declaring a let run notice for water customers. Adams Township Manager Heather Platzke sent a warning on Saturday. “Due to extreme cold weather conditions, the towns of Baltic, Trimountain, and Painesdale in Adams Township should let their water run to prevent freezing. Water should only be run from one faucet and no more than the width of a pencil. This is effective immediately and until further notice.”
The City of Houghton made a similar announcement on Monday. Manager Eric Waara says officials use a couple of different sources of information to make a determination. The first is data collected by Michigan Tech’s Keweenaw Research Center measuring frost depth near the Houghton County Memorial Airport. Public works employees can obtain readings from the sewers, measuring where the frost line is in manholes.
Average temperatures traditionally rise through the month. In Houghton, the normal high for March 1st is 29 degrees, hitting the freezing point on March 11th and ending at 40 degrees on the 31st. Low temperatures climb from 15 to 26 degrees.
