Isle Royale staff are planning to release a final update on the Horne Fire for the season later this week. The National Park Service’s last statement placed the blaze at 521 acres in size with 85 percent containment. Liz Valencia says that the weather has turned wet and humid in recent months, which has allowed crews to relax. The fire is still classified as active, though, and monitored continuously.
Research is wrapped up not long after the Rock Harbor Lodge closes for the season mid-September. All personnel will be off the island by the end of the month.
Valencia does not expect the fire to be 100 percent contained once people leave, but that should not be a problem.
The Isle Royale Queen IV, one of the private vessels that transport visitors to the island, will be in use this week for a charity color cruise along the Portage Canal.
