High speed chase through Ontonagon Friday night

A man who had stolen a vehicle in Wisconsin the day before led police on a high speed chase through Ontonagon County Friday night. A call came in to the Ontonagon County Sheriff’s Office about a man driving recklessly and failing to pay for gasoline. A deputy spotted the vehicle in question at 10:25 PM and the chase began, with the suspect fleeing at over 100 miles per hour.

He crashed in Rockland before continuing on foot. At the time, the temperature had plunged to -15 degrees. Several responding agencies set up a perimeter and were able to locate the man in an outbuilding on a residential property. He is being held at the Ontonagon County jail.

Arraignment is expected this week on charges including fleeing and eluding an officer, operating a vehicle while intoxicated, and gasoline theft. During the pursuit, law enforcement became aware that the man had stolen the vehicle from near Wausau, Wisconsin on Thursday and he is also facing a count related to that.
