Helping The Elderly Get to Doctor Appointments- LBFE’s Medical Transport Program

The Little Brothers Friends of the Elderly does a wide variety of good work to help out the elderly of the community, including transport to and from doctor appointments. Volunteers are a necessity to keep this program running. Stipends are available if the volunteer uses their own car.

“Well right now, we’re between 80 and 90 rides per month, and that’s been steadily growing over a period of months. We see a need for an additional 40 to 50 drivers to support the program as we expand more into Baraga and Ontonagon Counties. Right now we have 20 to 25 steady drivers who are very active in the program. Our range is mostly Houghton and Hancock area, the occasional ride to Marquette, I’d say we go to Marquette once or twice a week for sure. [We’re] looking to expand into Baraga and Ontonagon Counties- that’s where our need for divers is greatest.” – Paul Bruckman, Medical Transport Coordinator at LBFE

If you use your own car, you will need to show your insurance and drivers license, but they also have vehicles you can use.

“We have this Ford transit van with the electric wheelchair hoist, [which is] a very handy too. We have 3 other minivans that are capable of transporting wheelchairs and 3 sedans as well.” – Paul Bruckman, Medical Transport Coordinator at LBFE
