In spring training baseball, Justin Verlander couldn’t hold an early lead, and the Detroit Tigers lost to the Philadelphia Phillies 8-2 yestrday. Verlander gave up a run in the top of the first inning. Detroit responded with two in the bottom of the first. Daniel Nava’s three-run homer in the third inning put the Phillies up for good. Mike Pelfrey pitched three innings of relief, and gave up back-to-back home runs. The Tigers will face the Baltimore Orioles this afternoon.

Manager Brad Ausmus confirmed yesterday that Matt Boyd will open the season in the starting rotation, and that Anibal Sanchez will open the season in the bullpen. The Tigers made another round of roster cuts, including relievers Blaine Hardy and Angel Nesbitt, infielder Omar Infante, and outfielder Alex Presley. Infante has the option of looking for a job with another team. They also placed outfielder Steven Moya on waivers. He could be assigned to Toledo if he’s not claimed by another team.

Davies

The Milwaukee Brewers closed their Cactus League season with an 8-6 loss to the Los Angeles Angels yesterday. Zach Davies gave up four runs over four innings. Jesus Aguilar hit his seventh home run of the spring. The Brewers have today off. They’ll host the Chicago White Sox for exhibition games tomorrow and Saturday in Milwaukee to round out their spring schedule.

The Portage Lake Pioneers and the Calumet Wolverines play in the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament this weekend. We’ll broadcast their games, starting with the Pioneers’ contest against the Eagle River Falcons. Pregame coverage will start around 11:45 tomorrow morning on KBear 102.3 and KBear102.com.
