Hancock City Councilmember and former mayor Mary Tuisku has died. The following was posted on the Downtown Hancock Facebook page:
It is with deepest sympathy that we mourn the loss of Mary J Tuisku who passed away May 14, 2017.
Mary was an active and compassionate proponent for the City of Hancock, having served on the City Council for many years and also as Mayor from 1990 to 1995. She served as Emergency Manager, Hancock representative of the Keweenaw Historic Park Service and was active on Personnel Committee and helped rewrite the City Charter. Mary was never afraid to make intelligent and fiscally responsible decisions, however tough they may be, for those she served. The City of Hancock has suffered a great loss.
Her Finnish heritage and “Perha” (family) were Mary’s passion. Perha was her motto for life, tattooed on her arm and seen on her vehicle license plate. Mary was instrumental in forming the “Sister City” relationship with Porvoo, Finland. Mary’s family included those related and even more extended through friendship.
Our most sincere condolences go to Mary’s husband, Dick and their family and many friends.
