Hancock School District changes COVID policy

When the bell rings for the first time just after Labor Day, Hancock students are going to notice some changes. Many of the protocols put into place during the COVID-19 pandemic will be optional for next school year. Superintendent Steve Patchin says students get to choose whether to use face coverings and many other previous requirements.

We’re not going to be requiring mask wearing inside of our schools, but they are able to do it on their own, and that will be respected. We’re not going to be requiring vaccines, we’re not going to be requiring the rapid testing that they have been doing in the past.

Student-athletes will be the first to see the difference.

Patchin says several of the lessons from COVID will remain in place.

But we’re still going to keep some of the protocols that we’ve learned, like focusing in on the hand washing and good hygiene techniques. We’ve learned a lot through the pandemic.

Patchin says the efforts mirror the strategies used by the district for its Northern Lights Summer Learning and Outdoor Adventure programs. Hancock held an outdoor graduation ceremony for the first time this year, and that will be permanent going forward.

Keweenaw Report has reached out to both the Calumet-Laurium-Keweenaw and Houghton-Portage Township School Districts for comment on what they intend for the fall. We have not heard back yet.
