Hancock Receiving $90,000 from EGLE to Stop Erosion on Waterfront

The city of Hancock received a grant recently, that will help prevent further erosion of the city’s shoreline. The 90,000 dollar grant from EGLE will look to slow the rate of erosion on the city’s waterfront, east of the Ramada Inn. City Manager Mary Babcock says full details between EGLE and the city have yet to be hashed out regarding the design for the new sidewalk.

One of the main reasons this project was applied for was to stop the erosion. I mean we’ve lost quite a few feet of waterfront in that area. We’re going to be putting in some plants along with the sidewalk. – City Manager, Mary Babcock.

The plan as of now will look to use native plants that have deep root systems. Plants such those tend to soak up water at a faster rate, which will hopefully slow the rate at which the city loses waterfront along the portage canal. The eroded away waterfront is not attached to losses during the father’s day flood, and Hancock has lost close to 8 feet of shoreline in that area.

The grant is 50/50, with half the funding coming from the city’s Downtown Development Authority. The city is looking into other grants that would accomplish similar goals for the shoreline. There is no word yet on what other options are out there.
