Houghton County will sell the Houghton County Arena to the city of Hancock for one dollar. Hancock has agreed to allow the MSU Extension Office to continue working out of the facility with no charge for a period of 10 years, and has also come to an agreement with the County Fair Board to also continue their operations out of the arena. The Portage Lake Multi Educational Services currently in charge of running the arena’s day to day operations has planned to disband next summer, and will work with Hancock on a transition plan for the daily operations. Houghton County will need to close out their debts with the Houghton County Arena to the tune of 380,000 dollars from the general fund. With the sale Hancock has agreed that in the future if the Arena were to go back on the market, the county will have the first opportunity to repurchase the facility back for that same one dollar price tag.
