While the main location on the Houghton waterfront is closed, there are options for Portage Lake District Library patrons. Director Michael Stanitis says the Hancock branch continues to operate normally. In addition to being able to rent out books, the branch has public computers to allow for internet access. You can also utilize libby and other electronic resources, plus put holds on books located elsewhere.
The Hancock branch is inside the high school and middle school building on Campus Drive. Friday mornings at 10 there is a weekly craft activity for children. Library Manager Boni Ashburn runs a book club that meets the third Thursday of each month. Selections can be fiction and non-fiction, be contemporary or classics. There is also an option to rent out book club kits, consisting of eight copies of the month’s featured title, and a discussion starter pack to allow patrons to meet on their own.
The main branch is closed temporarily due to a number of staff dealing with various illnesses.
