At Monday’s Hancock Board of Education meeting, Superintendent Steve Patchin talked about two scheduled facilities improvements. Bathrooms at Barkell Elementary are set to be remodeled and the entrance to the High School/Middle School will have pavement replaced and leveled at a cost of $230,700. Only one bid was received for the work from MJO Contracting. It was 10 percent above the estimate.
Additionally bricks will be installed with the option for businesses, alumni, and city residents to engrave them via a fundraiser. The hope is to use the money to complete improvements to the commons area near the gymnasium and auditorium in the future.
A proposal to sign a co-op agreement for middle school football with the new Copper Island Academy charter school saw significant public comment. Patchin says talks are only preliminary so far.
Copper Island Academy is a K-8 school. Patchin said the co-op, if it were agreed to, could provide an opportunity to build familiarity with the Hancock athletic community among students who would otherwise go to another district for high school. Of those who weighed in on the issue, all were against the idea.
The board also approved the disbursement of $100,000 to purchase 250 Chromebooks for students in the district.
