Hancock dog park looking for funding help

Hancock is hoping to find owners passionate about their pooches.

Cost estimates for the dog park site near the Four Seasons Chalet have risen to around $75,000. Officials say the biggest culprit is the steel fence needed to secure the enclosure. A recent bid from a Marquette area firm came in well above estimates.

The Michigan Economic Development Corporation is agreeing to match funds raised by the city through Patronicity. Councilor John Haeussler, also on the Recreation Committee, says the caveat is the city has to hit the goal it has set for itself. Haeussler talks about how Hancock came to the $20,000 figure.

There was a little bit of a compromise, I would say, between the Recreation Commission members between whether we should ask for $25,000 or more or maybe $10,000 to $15,000, which in your mind seems a more attainable goal. You really want to reach the goal to get that match.

When the campaign goes live, Hancock will have eight weeks to reach the mark. If it can do that, the Patronicity funding plus the MEDC match will equal at least $40,000. The city intends to use funds it collects through the recreation millage as well.

The city has also submitted an application for the PetSafe Bark For Your Park grant competition. The entries are judged and only six finalists advance to a popular vote round. Haeussler says that the number of entries makes that avenue less likely to be successful.
