Wednesday’s Hancock City Council meeting had a lengthy discussion about a potential land purchase near Navy Street along the canal, with the measure eventually being tabled. Members Whitney Warstler and Will Lytle had the most questions on the matter. Their primary concern was the precedent that would be set.
City Manager Mary Babcock says the issue goes back 30 years. There are four parcels, one originally owned by the Carmody Lahti Real Estate agency. The other three are held by Finlandia University. Unlike other properties in the area, the city was rejected when it asked for easements to allow public access on a trail through those parcels.
The final vote was 4-3 to delay the measure. A grant could still be approved at a special council meeting.
The group also set up a schedule to prepare the next budget. The first meeting is set for March 31st. There will be a work session on the second Wednesday in April, May, and June before adoption would hopefully occur at the June 16th council meeting.
