Hancock City Council opts against Houghton waterfront resolution

At Wednesday’s Hancock City Council meeting, there was only a brief discussion about the rezoning of the former Michigan Smelter site in Houghton. On February 3rd, the group had discussed the possibility of offering a resolution on the issue, citing interest in preserving the value of Hancock’s city beach and marina.

After correspondence with Houghton City Manager Eric Waara, Mayor Pro Tem Will Lytle had written up a draft that encompassed both the new information the council had received, and the concerns that were previously raised to give the option for Hancock to go on record in an official capacity.

I don’t feel that we have to move forward with the resolution, but I wanted to make it available so that if our council is interested, at least we have a basis for beginning a discussion.

Councilman Jon Haeussler spoke for a majority of the council in saying he didn’t feel it was necessary.

Now that I am aware what is before our friends across the lake is a request for rezoning, my personal feeling is that is not our purview to comment on that aspect of their business. I would prefer not to have it on the agenda.

The Houghton Planning Commission’s recommendation for rezoning the Coles Creek site as commercial will be the subject of public comment at a meeting of the Houghton City Council on February 24th.
