Hancock City Council modifies bathroom contract

A special meeting of the Hancock City Council on Friday approved a contract with LJJ Construction to complete an addition to the campground bathroom. In a 6-0 vote, the council approved three changes to the existing proposal. The body thought it important for the addition to match the tone of the campground bathroom, so it approved ceramic tile installation rather than epoxy flooring. Another concern was how long epoxy would last compared to the alternative. Lighting will be upgraded in the old bathroom when LEDs are placed in the new section. The change that had the least amount of debate was substituting solid surface walls for the shower stalls, instead of using epoxy. Erica Malone from OHM Advisors spoke to the council.

The solid surface walls would definitely give you a better product, but there wouldn’t be any difficulty with installing or using the epoxy paint on the walls if you wanted to save that $2,000.

The changes increase expenses from $190,975 to $199,331. The additional costs will be picked up by the city through the general fund. Many on the council felt that the work would need to be done in the near term regardless and adding the costs to the construction already slated for this summer was more efficient than delaying it for a year or two. City Manager Mary Babcock said that even using change orders to amend the project in the coming months before building begins could affect the price.

It is a concern to me that if we don’t accept the alternates right now, the price could be quite a bit higher.

The deadline for the council’s decision on the bid is today.
