Guts frisbee players descending on the Keweenaw

The International Frisbee Tournament returns July 10-11, with teams coming from as far away as Japan. They’ll be playing guts frisbee at Hancock’s Driving Park, which Wikipedia describes as similar to dodgeball. Longtime player Ron Blau says that is somewhat accurate.

Teams of five are lined up across from each other and a tosser whips the disc upwards of 90 miles per hour at the opposing squad. If it is too high or too low, the receiving team gets a point. If it is on target and dropped, the throwing team gets a point. Then the player responsible for the drop becomes the tosser. If it is caught, no point is registered. Matchups are only won when one team gets to 21 points, and you have to win by two.

Blau says Saturday will involve exhibitions to determine seeding. He runs through the format for the rest of the tournament.

Everyone will start out with a two-out-of-three game. If you lose, you go to the losers’ bracket. If you lose again after that, you’re out. You keep advancing two-out-of-three, two-out-of-three all the way through the winners’ bracket. Whoever wins the winners’ bracket will be in the finals and you can come up through the losers’ bracket.

The survivors of each bracket square off for the coveted Nachazel Cup.

Blau says there is no preregistration required so the amount of participants is unknown, but organizers expect around 15 teams. Newcomers are welcome, and Blau says that if you would like to play, just show up to the gathering planned on Friday, July 9th at Hancock Beach in the evening. Blau and others will be happy to help you organize a team.
