Gremlins Sweep Copper Country Invitational – Tuesday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school softball yesterday…
– Calumet defeated Houghton 8-3 in the first game of their doubleheader. The second game was stopped in the fifth inning because of rain, with Calumet leading 2-1.
– Hancock defeated Baraga 13-3.
– Jeffers v Gogebic Miners – not reported.
– Lake Linden-Hubbell v L’Anse – not reported.

In baseball today, weather permitting…
– Houghton plays at L’Anse.
– Hancock visits Calumet.
– Jeffers hosts the Gogebic Miners.

In track and field, the Copper Country Invitational at Calumet yesterday was completed, despite the rain. Houghton took both titles.

On the girls side, Lake Linden-Hubbell finished second, followed by Chassell, Calumet, Hancock, West Iron County, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City, Jeffers and L’Anse. Houghton’s Anabel Needham won the 1600 and 3200-meter runs, and anchored the winning 3200-meter relay team. Kendra Monette won the shot put, and Sloane Zenner claimed the 400-meter dash – both were members of the winning 800-meter relay team. Lake Linden’s Laura Lyons took the 200-meter dash and the long jump. See full results here.

On the boys side, Calumet placed second, followed by Hancock, Chassell, West Iron County, Lake Linden-Hubbell, L’Anse, Dollar Bay-Tamarack City and Baraga. The Houghton 3200-meter relay team of Seth Helman, P.J. Donnely, Nicholas Wilson, and Clayton Sayen broke a 19-year-old school record. Helman also won the 3200-meter run. Wilson claimed the 800-meter run. Sayen took the 200-meter dash, and anchored the winning 1600-meter relay team. See full results here.

MLB
The Detroit Tigers had yesterday off, and open a home series against the Baltimore Orioles tonight. Matthew Boyd will start against Wade Miley. Pregame coverage will begin at 7:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Drake

Hunter Renfroe’s two-run homer in the bottom of the 10th inning lifted the San Diego Padres to a 6-5 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers last night. Renfroe’s blast off Oliver Drake wiped out the lead Milwaukee had taken in the top of the 10th on a long home run by Eric Sogard. Jesús Aguilar also homered for the Brewers.

The Brewers continue that set in San Diego tonight. Jimmy Nelson will pitch against Clayton Richard.

NHL
In the NHL Eastern Conference final last night, the Penguins edged the Senators 1-0. That series is tied 1-1.

The Western Conference final continues tonight, as the Predators host the Ducks. That series is tied 1-1.

NBA
The Celtics advanced with a 115-105 victory over the Wizards in game seven of that series last night. Boston will face Cleveland in the Eastern Conference final beginning tomorrow.

The Warriors edged the Spurs 113-111 in the opening game of the Western Conference final last night.  That series continues in California tonight.

Our high school spring sports broadcast coverage continues Thursday, when the Houghton baseball team plays a doubleheader at Calumet. The pregame show will start around 3:40 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
