Gremlins Boys, Lakes Girls Take Houghton County Invitational Titles – Saturday Sports Wrap

High School
In high school softball Friday…
– Calumet swept a doubleheader from Baraga. The Copper Kings got two home runs from Celia Peterson in the opener, and collected 13 hits in a 22-2, five-inning victory. Emily Erkkila struck out four, and earned the win. Each team scored six runs in the first inning of the second game, but reliever Calumet reliever Molly Helminen shut down the Vikettes the rest of the way, and the Copper Kings rolled to a 16-6, five-inning victory. Helminen also homered as the Kings scored nine runs in the fifth inning to put the game away.

Today…
– Westwood visits the area for games against Houghton and Calumet.

In baseball yesterday…
– Hancock dropped both ends of a doubleheader to the Gogebic Miners, 5-3 and 10-4.
– Houghton lost to Bark River-Harris 16-4. The Gremlins will play two games at the Escanaba Invitational today.
– L’Anse v Jeffers – not reported.

Today…
– Calumet plays at Negaunee.

Houghton won the boys team competition at the Houghton County Track Invitational at Lake Linden Friday. Calumet finished second, followed by Lake Linden-Hubbell, Hancock, Chassell, Dollar Bay and Jeffers. For the Gremlins,  Clayton Sayen set a school record while winning the 800-meter run, and anchored the winning 1600-meter relay team. Dante Cyrus won the 300-meter hurdles, and led the winning 800-meter and 1600-meter relay teams. Seth Helman won the 3200-meter run, and led the winning 3200-meter relay team. Lake Linden’s Brendan Middleton took the 100-meter dash, and anchored the winning 400-meter relay team. See full results here.

Lake Linden-Hubbell won the girls meet, followed by Houghton, Hancock, Calumet, Chassell, Dollar Bay and Jeffers. Laura Lyons of the Lakes won the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes and the long jump. Houghton’s Kendra Monette won the 100-meter dash and the shot put. Anabel Needham of the Gremlins took the 1600-meter and 3200-meter runs, and anchored the winning 3200-meter relay team. MLB
The Detroit Tigers were shut out by the Los Angeles Angels 7-0 Friday night. Detroit got only four hits off Matt Shoemaker and a trio of relievers. Jordan Zimmermann pitched into the sixth inning, was charged with five runs on 10 hits, and took the loss. Anibal Sanchez gave up the other two runs in the ninth inning.

Sogard

The Tigers continue that series against the Angels in Los Angeles tonight. Daniel Norris will start against Ricky Nolasco. Pregame coverage will begin at 8:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.

Braun

The Milwaukee Brewers blasted four home runs, and defeated the New York Mets 7-4 Friday night. Eric Sogard went deep in hi first game in the majors since 2015. Orlando Arcia, Hernán Pérez and Jett Bandy also homered. Matt Garza got the win, giving up two runs over six innings. Jared Hughes earned his first save of the season, after Neftalí Feliz was removed from the closer’s role earlier in the day.

The Brewers continue that series against the Mets tonight. Zach Davies will pitch against Robert Gsellman.

Sogard was in the lineup because the Brewers placed Ryan Braun on the disabled list. He’s battling a calf strain and a sore elbow.

NHL
The Nashville Predators edged the Anaheim Ducks 3-2 in overtime in the opening game of the NHL Western Conference final Friday night. That series continues tomorrow.

The Eastern Conference final begins tonight, when the Penguins entertain the Senators.

Anthony Mantha was named the Detroit Red Wings Rookie of the Year Friday by members of the Detroit Sports Broadcasters Association.

NBA
In the NBA playoffs last night…
– The Wizards edged the Celtics 92-91. That series is tied 3-3, and will conclude on Monday.

NFL
Former Green Bay Packers Defensive End Clarence Williams has died. Williams played in 111 games for the Pack from 1970 to 1977. He was 70.

Former Detroit Lions safety Yale Lary passed away Friday morning at age 86. Lary starred on the great Lions teams of the 1950s, and is a member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Keweenaw Roller Girls
The Keweenaw Roller Girls will open their roller derby season tonight against the Chippewa Valley Roller Girls at the Calumet Colosseum. Doors open at 5:00, and the match begins at 6:00. Tickets are $5.00; children ages 10 and under get in free. For more details, click here.
