Granholm’s Driver Responsibilty Fees “Blown Away”

If you’re a Michigan driver that’s ever had to pay a driver responsibility fee, you’ll be happy to know that those add on fines put in place by former Governor Jennifer Granholm will soon be “blown away.”

The Driver Responsibility Fee Program was instituted in 2003 and required drivers to pay the state on top of local fines inherently associated with the violation for which they were cited. Often times those state fees amounted to several times the amount of the original fine.

Governor Snyder signed legislation yesterday that puts an early end to the Driver Responsibility Fee program that would have expired in October of 2019.

Under the new legislation those fees will be eliminated on October 1st of this year and orders the department of treasury to stop collecting outstanding fees on September 30th.

It also means that drivers who have an outstanding balance at that time, would no longer be liable and can then have their licenses reinstated and those fees will be waived.

Lt. Gov. Brian Calley said, “The  fees placed an unfair burden on Michigan families that made it difficult for many to reach their full potential”

In addition, the bill also eliminates the $125 reinstatement fee collected by the secretary of State.
