Goblins, Superheroes, and characters returning to Shelden Avenue for Treat Street in Houghton

Halloween is just around the corner. But downtown Houghton will fill with costumed characters on Saturday. Treat Street has been a community favorite event. As the event has grown in popularity, Business development coordinator Amy Zawada says the city has moved around traffic during the two hours. Invited the Keweenaw Chamber of Commerce to host kids’ activities on the Isle Royale street Parking deck. And added a trunk or treat with Greek life organizations at Michigan Tech.

But it’s a ton of candy and we always go through all of it. So it’s a widely attended event and it looked like the weather is gonna be beautiful, sunny, mid-60s, so I’m sure we’ll have lots of crowds, but that’s great. That’s why we like to see everyone out having fun enjoying the weather and enjoying Shelden Avenue. – Amy Zawada, Community and Business Development Coordinator, City of Houghton

During treat street, the city police department will redirect traffic around Shelden Avenue. Either take MacInnes drive up toward Sharon Avenue to cross the bridge via m-26. Or travel down Lakeshore Drive, and return to Shelden Avenue from Quincy Street. Zawada adds attendees of the event can find parking near the national park.

I would recommend people park either in that free lot by Christ and it kind of goes down towards the National Park. You could park anywhere along Lakeshore Drive and walk up. There’s no start or end point. So anywhere on Lakeshore Drive, you could park or above off of Montezuma or West Houghton and walk down. You can just hop in the line or hop in wherever you come in – Amy Zawada, Community and Business Development Coordinator, City of Houghton.

Treat Street on Saturday in Houghton will begin at 3 pm, and run until 5 pm. Travelers bypassing downtown will need to take detours toward Sharon Avenue or for a Lakeshore Drive during the event. Many businesses will join the fun and pass out candy to the community. Those interested in learning more about Treat Street in Houghton can find more details here.
