GLHL
The Portage Lake Pioneers joined the Calumet Wolverines on the sidelines of the Great Lakes Hockey League tournament Saturday, after falling to the Mosinee Papermakers 9-2 in their final pool game. The teams were tied at one after the first period, but the Papermakers broke it open with three goals in the second, and added five in the third. Reid Pietila and Tom Love scored for Portage Lake, which had only 10 players for the game, including goalies.
The Pioneers had opened the tournament with a 5-4 overtime loss to the Eagle River Falcons on Friday. The Calumet Wolverines lost both of their pool games on Friday, 11-4 to the Marquette Mutineers, and 8-1 to the Fond du Lac Bears.
In the semifinals Saturday evening, the Papermakers defeated the Bears 5-3, and the West Bend Bombers edged the Fox Cities Ice Dogs 2-1 in overtime. The Papermakers and Bombers will play for the tournament title this afternoon.

NHL
The Detroit Red Wings gave up two late goals, and fell to the Toronto Maple Leafs 5-4 Saturday. Niklas Kronwall tied the contest at three with a little more than five minutes remaining. James van Riemsdyk put Toronto ahead with two-and-a-half minutes remaining, and Auston Matthews provided an insurance tally 77 seconds later. Mike Green got one back for Detroit with 45 seconds remaining, but the Wings couldn’t get another. Jimmy Howard took the loss in net. Detroit will host the Ottawa Senators Monday evening.
NBA
The Detroit Pistons are off until they play at Toronto on Wednesday. Tip-off is at 7:30 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University softball team dropped both ends of a doubleheader at Lawrence University Saturday, 9-5 and 3-1. In the first game, Makenna Lloyd had two hits and drove in two runs. Harlie Caster had two hits and scored twice. In the second game, Serena Jaime recorded nine assists. That broke the school record of eight, set by Annika Kahkonen against Bethany Lutheran last spring. The Lions left a combined 18 runners on base in the two games.
The Lions baseball team earned a split at Lakeland University Saturday afternoon, losing the first game 6-3, then coming from behind to win the nightcap 6-4. Patrick Coles had three hits in the first game, and two in the second.
MLB
The Detroit Tigers closed their exhibition season with a 3-2 loss to the Miami Marlins on Saturday. Daniel Norris gave up a run in the first inning, and left with two outs in the third, after surrendering five hits. He showed no signs of the arm fatigue that raised concern after his previous start. The Tigers open the regular season tomorrow afternoon against the White Sox in Chicago. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:45 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Tigers catcher James McCann was struck on the hand by a pitch while batting in Saturday’s game. X-rays showed no structural damage, and he’s not expected to miss any time.
Left-handed reliever Daniel Stumpf will stay with the Detroit Tigers organization. Stumpf was a Rule Five draft pick from the Kansas City Royals. It was the second time Stumpf was selected in the Rule Five draft, which gave him the right to become a free agent when Detroit cut him last week. He opted to sign with the Tigers, and will be assigned to Toledo.
The Milwaukee Brewers concluded their preseason with a 5-4 loss to the White Sox at Miller Park. Jimmy Nelson was sharp, giving up a run on two hits over five innings. Kirk Nieuwenhuis homered. The Brewers open the regular season at home Monday afternoon against the Colorado Rockies.
NCAA
Gonzaga will face North Carolina in the championship game of the NCAA Division One Men’s Basketball Tournament tomorrow night, after both teams won tight semifinal victories on Saturday. The Bulldogs defeated South Carolina 77-73. The Tarheels squeaked past Oregon 77-76. Hear the championship game at 9:20 tomorrow evening on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
