Thursday and Friday afternoons were busy ones at the Portage Health Foundation offices in Hancock, as representatives from several nonprofits picked up their Giving Tuesday donations. Twenty-two organizations took part, receiving almost $650,000 once the match from PHF was figured in. The total was roughly $50,000 more than last year.
Robert Megowan from Houghton County Simple Kindness for Youth, also known as SKY, says his group relies on teachers to let them know about situations that might otherwise go unaided.
Megowan says the Giving Tuesday total jives with what he knows about this community. We are quick to help those who need it.
Michael Babcock says Portage Health Foundation received donations from over 1,100 people for Giving Tuesday, a vast majority of it local.
Donations could be split among all participating organizations or directed to specific ones. Babcock says Omega House led the way with over $120,000. Thirty-One Backpacks was second followed by the Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home.
