Giving Tuesday Non-Profit Spotlight: Unite Mental Health and Wellness

This past year was very exciting for leaders at Unite Mental Health and Wellness. Late last year the non-profit mental health provider opened its doors to the community. While also introducing themselves to the community through Giving Tuesday. Angela Price and Beth Shannon set out with the goal of closing the mental wellness access gap in the Copper Country. Offering a space for people who do not qualify for severe mental health treatment or are in crisis, but are looking for an outlet for everyday types of stress in their life. In the past year, both say that the group has been able to successfully open their facility, add new mental health personnel, and reach a significant portion of the local community, while also offering different mental health programs during the year.

“The first thing we did was open our office to increase access to mental health care. But we also wanted to help with the affordability, so we became credentialed through insurance companies. But what we’re still noticing is that there is a huge need for affordability. People can’t afford care all of the time. SO one hundred percent of what we raise this Giving Tuesday will go toward funding mental health services. So if somebody calls up and says, I just can’t afford this but I know I need to come in. Those funds will be used to help pay for services.” – Angela Price, Co-Founder, of Unite Mental Health and Wellness

When Unite Mental Health and Wellness joined Giving Tuesday last year the group was in its first chapter of operating. The donations provided to the non-profit by the community were a great help to them in the first few months of 2023.

“Because we were new we were still operating on hopes and dreams. So it allowed us to hire another therapist, and it gave the opportunity to even just get the word out a little more. We kind of were able to do things to help enhance the service side. And because we were so new to the community it helped us get going for a bit.” – Angela Price, Co-Founder, of Unite Mental Health and Wellness

Giving Tuesday with the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation last year raised over 650,000 dollars from individuals in the community and from friends of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Annually the foundation has provided a match sum to add to the day of giving’s total. Adding up to over 2.7 million dollars spread throughout the copper country over the past six years.
