Last year the Bootjack Fire and Rescue Foundation joined Giving Tuesday for the first time. Thanks to funds raised in Giving Tuesday 2022, the foundation was able to purchase a Lucas Chest Compression system. This can be used in medical emergencies when a first responder needs to have hands free to check vitals and the machine can begin chest compressions to restart the heart. The Bootjack Fire and Rescue department sees an average of 35 to 40 calls to a fire. But on the medical side, the department responds to over 300 calls a year on average.
“If we have a call in Jacobsville, especially in the winter, it can take upward of 45 minutes for an ambulance to arrive to transport the patient. We are a non-transport unit. So our responders come from our homes, and take the agency vehicle or our vehicle that has gear in it. Depending on the nature of the call. And Giving Tuesday has been great to be able to upgrade our equipment. And having enough equipment amongst our members helps to curb that barrier with the rural-ness and time it takes because of the distance.” Jen Beaudette, Medical Director, Bootjack Fire and Rescue
Bootjack Fire and Rescue Medical Director Jen Beaudette says that the important work of non-profits in the region cannot be overstated. She adds that the group was excited to hear they were picked for a second year. And to hear that they are joined by a variety of great causes in the Copper Country.
“With Copper Shores leading the way and being able to help support Giving Tuesday and many other grant-funded endeavors. It has shown a really big impact on the ability to make a difference. And being able to have the financial support is great. You have volunteers who are ready to work hard and do a task. And sometimes that financial aspect can be the hinge. Giving Tuesday with the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation last year raised over 650,000 dollars from individuals in the community and from friends of the Keweenaw Peninsula. Annually the foundation has provided a match sum to add to the day of giving’s total. Adding up to over 2.7 million dollars spread throughout the copper country over the past six years.
