The second garden in a pilot program made possible by the Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the Portage Health Foundation, and the Western Upper Peninsula Planning & Development Region office (WUPPDR) will be installed Saturday.
The first got put in at Horizons Alternative School in Mohawk on the fifth. That one is a community garden that will serve area restaurants, as well as providing a learning opportunity for students. There is more than one way to serve as a therapeutic escape, though. Barbara Kettle Gundlach Shelter Home Director Mary Niemela says theirs will be more aesthetic in nature. She says it is the perfect time for the shelter to have its first garden, coming off the recent relocation.
The build fulfills the requirements of the pilot program. Michigan Tech’s Dr. Angie Carter is providing advice and overseeing the installations. There is no word on what other sites may be included if the program is greenlit in full.
