January is National Radon Action Month. The Western Upper Peninsula Health Department would like to inform the community about the potential hazards associated with elevated radon levels in their homes. Radon is odorless, tasteless gas, that at high levels can increase the risk for lung cancer. Fortunately testing for radon is easy, and high levels of radon can be lowered. The gas typically enters buildings through cracks and openings in a building’s foundation, or walls. Radon is a problem for home owners because it can concentrate in a smaller area, rather than outdoors where it is diluted by the atmosphere. Within the four counties the health department is responsible for, an EPA study found that 10 percent of homes tested had elevated radon levels. The health department does have free radon home test kits available at their office for pick up. Please contact their Hancock or L’Anse office for availability.
