Five local organizations partnered to launch the Love the Keweenaw Campaign.
The Copper Harbor Trails Club, Eagle Harbor Township, Michigan State University extension office, Western Upper Peninsula planning and development region, and visit Keweenaw will launch the Love the Keweenaw campaign to support the growing interest in the Keweenaw peninsula’s outdoor recreation opportunities, attractions, and the need to enhance safe and responsible practices for residents and visitors alike.
The Love the Keweenaw campaign will equip the community with the tools and resources to make respectful, sustainable, low-impact decisions while exploring and recreating the region. Love the Keweenaw will educate recreational visitors and residents on leave-no-trace practices through five key pillars to loving the Keweenaw Peninsula.
First, leave no trace by practicing strategies and recreation that leave the landscape or site the way it has been historically. Second, encourage responsible recreation practices by helping outdoor enthusiasts develop good habits for being safe and prepared to visit the outdoors. Third, respecting private property while on trail networks; many trails and recreation areas have created long-term relationships with property owners that recreationists must maintain to keep trail networks running.
Trail clubs rely heavily on partnerships with private land owners to create a vast and enjoyable trail network in the copper country. The Love the Keweenaw campaign will distribute educational materials throughout the region through social media and outreach to local businesses.
