Five L’Anse Students Place 2nd at the Michigan Girls Future Flight Challenge

Five L’Anse students recently placed 2nd in the state at the Women of Aerospace Industry Association of Michigan’s Michigan Girls Future Flight Challenge. Students Amelia Knapp, Juliet Knapp, Hannah Wilson, Addy Snyder, and Genevieve Cadeau teamed up to create a unique solution for cleaning up the Great Lakes’ beaches. The team competed against 17 other teams from around the state.

Knapp, Cadeau, Knapp, Snyder, and Wilson chose to come up with a solution to pollution on the beach that involved collecting garbage, incinerating the waste, and recycling the ash as a material for road construction.

WAIAM Co-Chair and Director of Communications Lissa Barron says that the organization hopes to continue to inspire young women and girls to pursue careers in STEM fields through competitions such as the Michigan Girls Future Flight Challenge. Adding that the Aerospace industry, and others in a similar vein, needs passionate people, especially women, who want to solve unique problems with unique solutions. Upon returning to the area the students met with their mentor, Kim Dunnebacke of L’Anse Manufacturing, to receive their award. Dunnebacke says she was grateful for the opportunity to mentor the young ladies, and couldn’t be more proud of her performance in competition against many other great young minds.
