Six-alarm fire in Rabbit Bay

Bootjack Fire Department put out a request for mutual aid to fight a house fire at about 6:45 Saturday evening. A sauna ignited first and it eventually spread to the residence located at 45502 Rabbit Bay Road in Torch Lake Township. The narrow dirt street caused some congestion as six departments tried to deploy resources at the site.

The weather cooperated as moderate rain fell and temperatures dipped towards 60 degrees.

The smoke began to dissipate as fire fighters gained control.

Michigan State Police helped with traffic control as the road was closed between the fire and Lahti Creek about one mile to the south, where water was being drawn from. Thick smoke and dense trees kept the fire from being easily visible from the street.

A Dollar Bay tanker tops off one of two pools that were set up on Rabbit Bay Road.

Lake Linden, Hubbell, Tamarack City, Calumet Township and Rescue, and Dollar Bay Departments assisted. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation.
