First Sustainable Tourism Presentation with Visit Keweenaw Covers Dark Skies

The Keweenaw Peninsula has been a long-time favorite destination among nether light spotters for a few years. That’s because the region is home to expansive views to the north and a history of spectacular light shows. And communities who have committed to protecting the Keweenaw’s dark skies. Visit Keweenaw has found in recent years the region has seen more interest among both visitors and residents in the northern lights.

Later today Visit Keweenaw will open its sustainable tourism presentation series with guest John Muller from the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park in Copper Harbor. He will share information with business owners, civic leaders, and residents who are interested in protecting the dark sky sector of the Keweenaw Peninsula’s tourism industry. Muller will present how communities can implement public lighting that limits light pollution, and how businesses might be able to serve visitors hunting for the northern lights.

We’re going to treat this kind of like a lunch and learn series, where there will be some food to eat for participants. We’ll give presenters around 45 minutes to share best practices, and what they see in the industry. Leave some time for questions comments and group discussion. You’ll kind of be laser-focused on a different element of the tourism industry. So one topic might be very relevant to the general public. Some may be only of interest to some niche businesses that operate in the industry like facilities managers. OS we are going to try and go through the process and bring in as much expertise as we can. That way we can tackle some of these opportunities that present themselves. And make sure that the Keweenaw Peninsula is known as a leader in the sustainable tourism industry.” – Brad Barnett, Executive Director, Visit Keweenaw

The sustainable tourism presentation series by visiting Keweenaw with John Muller from the Keweenaw Dark Sky Park will begin at noon today. Mueller will be joined by John Barentine from Dark Skies Consulting during the presentation. The presentation will take place at the Keweenaw Area Community Foundation’s Hancock office located at 236 Quincy Street. The sustainable tourism presentation series also has an online attendance option for those unable to make it to the talk in person.
