Houghton County first responders reported to an apartment fire in Chassell this morning. At 5:30 am the Houghton County sheriff responded to 45190 US-41 for a fire at the Northwoods Resort and Apartments. Upon arrival, the north side of the structure was observed as fully engulfed in flame. Deputies made an entry to search for occupants. No persons were found inside the structure, however officials did rescue a single cat from one apartment. The Houghton County sheriff confirms that all renters at the Northwoods Apartments are Michigan Tech students who are currently away on Spring Break. The university has begun working to set up alternative housing solutions for those students when they return to campus. Officials report that the fire does not appear suspicious, as the fire started in a mechanical room.
