The Summit Lake Fire burns 304 acres of forest in the McCormick wilderness. Firefighter crews report that the fire has been 38 percent contained. Responders continue to prioritize areas near private lands. Moderately dry conditions in the region increase the probability of fire detection and movement. A reconnaissance flight on Saturday found scattered areas of heat remaining along the east and southeast flanks of the summit lake fire.
A third flight on Monday experiences degree temperatures upon approach and wind gusts from the south over 30 miles per hour. The fire crew continue reinforcing lines along the west and southwest. Unseasonably warm temperatures are expected through Wednesday, and the National Forest Service expects strong winds to continue. The area has a chance for rain after Wednesday.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation. Access to the Yellow Dog Trailhead remains closed at this time, no structures have been threatened by the blaze.
