The most effective fire department is one that is rarely needed. This week marks the annual fire prevention week for the city of Houghton. Each Fall members of the Houghton Fire Department provide fire education to the local school district through fire prevention classes. As well as provides programming to local senior housing facilities.
During the week the fire department encourages residents to consider inspecting their own home fire safety and prevention equipment. Such as installing and checking smoke detectors on each floor of the home. The department highly encourages installing a fire detector in each room if possible. While inspecting smoke detectors consider switching out the old battery for a new one. The fire department also suggests to inspect fire extinguishers. which should be accessible in the kitchen or garage, where fires are likely to start.
After inspecting home safety equipment, homeowners should have an exit strategy for their home in the case of fire. Each family member should know where to exit the structure and meeting location outside of the home.
