The on-site portion of the investigation into Calumet’s Fifth Street Fire has wrapped up. Village Manager Caleb Katz says that the Michigan State Police fire marshall and the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives will continue to work to identify the cause of the blaze, but have completed gathering evidence.
Fifth Street is open entirely, but fencing still surrounds the affected lots. Katz is asking people to continue to refrain from trying to take any items from the ruins. The village is still exploring the option of adding a sturdier perimeter.
Katz says federal relief will be hard to come by.
The same is true for assistance at the state level.
The Calumet Downtown Development Authority meets next week. The Village Council has a work session.
