Finnish American Folk School Offering Finnish Language Course for the Young and Old

Those who have wondered what Hancock’s Finnish Street names mean might want to take a class with the Finnish American Folk School. This summer kids and adults can learn the Finnish language during special program offerings at the Finnish American Heritage Center. The learning opportunities include three session classes for 3 to 6-year-olds and 7 to 10-year-olds, then a five-session course for adults. Those programs offer an introduction to the Finnish language and culture as a part of Juhannas with the folk school.

The courses are taught by Becky Louma, who was born in the Copper Country and now lives in Finland. She says that since moving to Finland in 2003 she’s been motivated to study the language and culture while also sharing the enjoyment and community the culture has brought to her through her education technology company Language Clubhouse. Registration for the adult course offerings will end on Friday or when classes are full.
