MLB
The Detroit Tigers survived another bullpen meltdown, and defeated the Cleveland Indians 7-6 Friday night. Detroit took a 6-0 lead into the eighth inning, thanks to home runs by Miguel Cabrera and Alex Avila. Cleveland picked up a run in the bottom of the eighth. Detroit added one in the top of the ninth on a Nicholas Castellanos RBI double. They needed it – the Indians loaded the bases and scored a run off William Cuevas. Francisco Rodriguez replaced Cuevas, struck out Abraham Almonte, and then gave up a pinch-hit grand slam to Lonnie Chisenhall. Rodriguez then struck out former Tiger Austin Jackson to end the game. Daniel Norris pitched six shutout innings to get the win.
The Tigers continue that series at Cleveland today. Justin Verlander will start against Corey Kluber. Pregame coverage will begin at 3:40 on AM 1400 and FM 99.3, WCCY.
Eric Thames homered, as the Milwaukee Brewers outscored the Cincinnati Reds 10-4 Friday night. Thames’ shot came as the Crew scored four runs in the sixth inning. They added four more in the seventh to put the game away. Starter Tommy Milone gave up three runs over five innings, and got the win. The Brewers continue that series in Cincinnati this afternoon. Zach Davies will pitch against Brandon Finnegan.
Finlandia
The Finlandia University baseball team lost both ends of a doubleheader at Wisconsin-Superior Friday, 13-3 and 9-5. Aaron Froelich homered and drove in all three Lions runs in the first game. Joey Krug homered in the nightcap.
MTU
The Michigan Tech football team will wrap up its football camp with its annual spring game today. Kickoff is at 1:00 at Sherman Field.
High School
The Houghton, Hancock and Lake Linden-Hubbell softball teams continue play at the Spring Swing at the Superior Dome today. On Friday, the Gremlins defeated Stephenson 11-1. Other scores were not reported.
NHL
In the NHL playoffs Friday night, the Blues edged the Wild 2-1, and lead that series two games to none. The Canadiens got past the Rangers 4-3 in overtime to tie that set at a win per team. The Penguins defeated the Blue Jackets 4-1 to take a two games to none lead in that series. The Oilers blanked the Sharks 2-0 – that set is tied at a win per team.
Today, the Bruins face the Senators, the Predators meet the Blackhawks, the Maple Leafs take on the Capitals, and the Flames face the Ducks.
NBA
The NBA playoffs open today. The Cavaliers face the Pacers, the Grizzlies take on the Spurs, the Bucks meet the Raptors, and the Jazz play the Clippers.
