FEMA Funding On The Line

Houghton County must have their damage cost estimates submitted by 5:00pm today.

Five damage assessment teams were working on Dollar Bay, Houghton, and Hancock yesterday after completing their rounds of Lake Linden and Hubbell earlier.

The information gathered by the teams is essential in the county’s attempt to receive federal designation as a disaster area which could lead to federal financial assistance.

If approved, local municipalities should get reimbursed for 100 percent of the damages through FEMA.

Private homeowners without flood insurance may qualify for a FEMA grant to repair damages to their home, but these grants might not be sufficient to cover those repairs.

The government can provide a low interest loan to cover the remaining costs.

The Houghton County Emergency Services department will be providing more information on applying for grants and loans soon.
