Feeding America West Michigan Returns to the western Upper Peninsula today. Feeding America west Michigan, has teamed up with the Copper Shores Community Health Foundation and students at the Ontonagon Area Schools over the past couple of years to deliver food to those in need in the region.
In western Michigan and the Upper Peninsula, Feeding America estimates the 261,000 people are food insecure. Food insecurity is a problem within communities that have difficulty accessing consistent food options that promote a healthy and active lifestyle. Within Baraga, Houghton, Keweenaw and Ontonagon counties, Feeding America estimates about 13 percent of the population is food insecure. The western counties of the Upper Peninsula appear more secure than counties in the eastern region of the peninsula.
At today’s food donation pick up site, participants will not need to show identification or proof of need. The Feeding American semi truck will arrive to the Ontonagon village fire hall at 12 noon.
Additionally Copper Shores is working with Feeding America to schedule future pick up days in October and November. Both groups are working out the final details for those donation site dates.
